racism is real - misogynoir is real.

Just to put background on this shit.. .the top picture is of Ethan Couch. According to wikipedia and various news sources he is “a North Texas teenager, who was sentenced to 10 years probation after being convicted of killing four pedestrians and seriously injuring two others while driving drunk. On June 15, 2013 he crashed a pickup truck into pedestrians. He was 16 at the time. In December 2013 he was sentenced to therapy at a long-term, in-patient facility,[1] after his attorneys successfully argued that the teen suffered from affluenza and needed rehabilitation, and not prison.”
The yoga, meditation and horse back riding are some of the amenities they have at the facility that is about $450.000 a year.

The bottom picture is of Cyntoia Brown. She grew up in a home with an abusive drunk father and a drug addicted prostitute mother. She eventually ran away with a friend and started ‘dating” (getting pimped) by older men. She stayed in deplorable conditions. The night of the killing, she just got her ass beat by her drug addicted boyfriend/pimp , when the victim Johnny Allen , a 43 year old sunday school teacher (side eye) who noticed her pain and talked to her. After hearing Cyntoia’s story, seeing her bruises, knowing she was underage he still tried to fuck her. What lead to the murder was Cyntoia thought he was going to kill her and shot him first..
She got no second chances after a long shitty life but in jail now at 25 she is working on her college degree ,still hopeful of seeing the outside world and trying to remain as reflective of her negative choices and be positive from her current position.

This is shit is disgusting, money, race, and class make a world of difference in the eyes of the law…

Mothers whose ties are cut at the border

It began as an episode of teenage defiance. Jennifer had watched her siblings all morning while her mother, Luz (names were changed: the family court case is still pending), was at work. The way Jennifer tells it,  the minute her mother  arrived home that afternoon, she  began complaining. “She was telling me, ‘You didn’t do this, you didn’t do that,’” says Jennifer, who was 17 years old at the time and feeling especially rebellious. They argued, and then Jennifer lashed out, striking her mother.
Luz remembers calling the police, but when they arrived, the officers informed her that there was nothing to be done. Jennifer was still a minor. In a fit of anger and frustration, Luz struck Jennifer and they began to fight. The police, hearing the commotion, returned to the apartment, handcuffed Luz and called Child Protective Services. That day in April 2013 was the last they lived together as a family.

What a shithead.

His sister’s gay and he still doesn’t give a shit about gay marriage. “I’m getting a clear message, alright” and I’m still going to ignore it. That’s just his modus operandi. Asshole.

But good on those kids for asking the questions.

Yes, he did. This man can take a really long walk off some choice cliffs I know.

Why don’t we talk about all the serial rapists?

In 2009, Detroit officials found more than 11,000 forgotten rape kits – some dating back to the 1980s – gathering dust in a police storage facility. The city launched an enormous initiative to process them all, and while only a fraction have been analyzed so far, a key trend has emerged: a lot of serial rapists.
So far, 1,600 victims’ rape kits have been processed. Among those, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office identified 100 likely serial rapists, through matches in CODIS, the country’s DNA database.
These numbers underline the miscarriage of justice that this stockpile of abandoned rape kits represents, a tiny slice of the estimated 400,000 unprocessed rape kits across the country. For example, there are the two young women who were violently raped by the same man five months apart in 2003. Their rape kits were shelved for 10 years. DeShawn Starks was finally charged after he raped two more young women last November. He pleaded no contest, and this week was sentenced to 45 to 90 years in prison.
The number of serial rapists also underlines a more obvious, but often overlooked, fact: serial rapists are responsible for an enormous percentage of the rapes that happen.

Anonymous asked: how is Lucy racist? I wanted to watch it and now im sad :(

aegontargaryen:

anonymous asked: What is Lucy and why is it racist?

lucy is a movie, coming out this summer in 2014. here’s the trailer for it.

anonymous asked: can you please explain how lucy is racist - i’m not saying it isn’t, i just havent seen the film yet or heard anything about it being racist. I was really excited to see it because it’s an action film with a female lead without an unnecessary love interest motivation…

lovely anon, i was so excited about the movie too. i love scarlet and it looked really amazing (apart from that stupid 10% brain thing, i don’t really like that trope) but then i started to realize how racist this movie is. we’ve only seen a trailer, couple of minutes and there are so many racist undertones.

this really says it.

people really see this movie “Lucy”  as a step in the right direction to more representation because somehow it’s revolutionary to have a white person as the (anti)hero killing people of color? People really think that one has to see the whole movie in it’s entirety to say that it’s shit? Other than swapping a white man for a white woman, it’s the same shit of invoking negative tropes and cliches against Asian men in modern movies that we’ve been seeing in the past couple of years since the Red Dawn remake. (source)

because, lets be honest, it’s true. i am all in for female lead in super heroes, and i am not the one who is angry because she’s not a POC. the way everyone else is portrayed, the way how it still hold onto those stupid tropes of asian/POCs as villains just disgusts me. maybe its even worse for me because i’m asian i dont even know.

the upcoming movie lucy will feature the age-old racist narrative of pure white woman (scarlet johansson) being violated by scary, brown men. and the new white feminist trope of women gaining their power by violently eliminating brown men. who needs the white male savior when we now have white female saviors, taking it into their own hands to save their whiteness from all that non-whiteness. so radical. (source)

feminism, hell yes. only white feminism? no. i am not here to see white female saviors kicking POCs ass, who look like they’re really poorly written. did someone who was involved with this movie even made effort?

image

let’s have a look in this picture. we see the white female lead and the asian antagonist. we see chinese writing in the background.

I just asked a family member to translate this. They came back with “Keep Clean. Apple, scallop & ginger, orange, tomato, grape” (source)

can this be even more ridiculous? just make your fucking research guys. do they think it looks fancy to have chinese writing on the wall? because its not??? its stupid and it makes me angry and/or wants to laugh.

Okay but why the fuck is this movie set in Asia, filled with Asian villains, with a white female protag? Yes, wow, the lead’s a woman, fantastic, but apart from that it’s not really any different from the other movies made in a long history of having white people kicking the shit out of exclusively Asian villains.

Really, seriously. I just want to know why they had to set it in Asia with a white woman lead. Why not set the damn movie in the US if they want a big name yt actress that badly? Or, why not just cast a Taiwanese actress if they want it to be set in Asia that bad?

Or maybe not do those things to avoid another Orientalist shitshow because those are exactly the thematic cues they’re going for with a vulnerable white woman being abused by morally corrupt Asian men. OH BUT FEMINIST SUBVERSION! THE VULNERABLE WHITE WOMAN KILLS THEM ALL INSTEAD, YEAHHHH GO FEMINISM!

Meanwhile Asian cultures continue to be portrayed as backwards, Asian men continue to be portrayed as vile predators, but hey go feminism right? Nevermind that Asian women get thrown under the bus with this too. (source)

i agree on this so much. just dont motherfucking make that movie in taiwan? and then we have all those white “feminist” who are like: “okay, this movie is amazing, has a female lead in a action/superhero movie and u all still find something to complain about, just shut up”

no. i dont care that she’s a woman if it’s racist. just because you have a female lead doesn’t make the movie amazing. and it sure doesn’t excuse the fact how racist it is. if you really are a feminist, you should know, that feminism not only includes white women. it includes POC women. feminism includes so many more than just that. don’t call yourself a feminist if you can ignore all these things and still watch this movie because *yay female lead*.

what is even worse is this scene:

image (source)

white woman literally kills an asian guy because he can’t speak english. LITERALLY. how should i feel as an asian woman? this guy could be so many other people i know in real life who can’t speak english. i could imagine it be my father or other people i know. but no, it’s okay, because she’s a woman. because it looks badass.

she isn’t even in the USA or any other english- speaking state. bUt nO OF COURSE YOU ALL HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH. not everything revolves about you. SHE’S the one who is in a foreign country, she should be the one adapting to it and not the other way round. i dont go to USA and shoot people because they can’t speak vietnamese.

that’s just fucking stupid why even.

for once i’d like to be able to post a trailer for a movie i’m interested in because of the female lead without feeling like a sack of shit afterward because someone needed to take a minute and really dissect every scene in the trailer just to outline how offensive it is. (…) we’re taking baby steps here, people. (…) so can’t we just take a minute to sit back and support an actress we like while enjoying an action film? /not sourcing this one because i am not an ass/

how can i enjoy a movie when i am offended.

how do you suppose to want me enjoy a movie when my people are thrown back down so you all can have your female lead

people say that this might take a step. that having this movie will open the doors for WOC. are you serious? do you want us to always be on the second array? do we have to sit quietly back and be all happy that you finally have a movie so we “might have one later too”?

also watch this video, because i dont really think i’m a great explainer.

Scarjo is also a scumbag who supports Israeli apartheid

Because young Black men and Black men rarely find places where they can feel safe, they are on hyper-surveillance concerning their surroundings, and they are hyper-vigilant to any signs of danger coming from the police, or individuals who act like the police, such as a George Zimmerman, security guards following them in stores and other individuals in positions of authority, Dr. Johnson said. He added Feb. 16 that Black men always are under intense surveillance by others.

“While treatable, there are significant racial and gender differences concerning who gets treatment for depression,” Dr. Lindsey wrote. “Few children and adolescents, especially African-American adolescents with a depressive disorder, receive care.”

This is scary shit. Please stay safe guys.

Quote 13 Apr 17,876 notes

The concern for overly exposed young bodies may be well-intentioned. With society fetishizing girls at younger and younger ages, girls are instructed to self-objectify and see themselves as sexual objects, something to be looked at. A laundry list of problems can come from obsessing over one’s appearance: eating disorders, depression, low self-worth. Who wouldn’t want to spare her daughter from these struggles?

But these dress codes fall short of being legitimately helpful. What we fail to consider when enforcing restrictions on skirt-length and the tightness of pants is the girls themselves—not just their clothes, but their thoughts, emotions, budding sexuality and self-image.

Instead, these restrictions are executed with distracted boys in mind, casting girls as inherent sexual threats needing to be tamed. Dress restrictions in schools contribute to the very problem they aim to solve: the objectification of young girls. When you tell a girl what to wear (or force her to cover up with an oversized T-shirt), you control her body. When you control a girl’s body—even if it is ostensibly for her “own good”—you take away her agency. You tell her that her body is not her own.

When you deem a girl’s dress “inappropriate,” you’re also telling her, “Because your body may distract boys, your body is inappropriate. Cover it up.” You recontextualize her body; she now exists through the male gaze.

—

What Do Dress Codes Say About Girls’ Bodies? (via becauseiamawoman)

Things that drive me crazy: Knowing that even though our age of consent is between 16-18 (depending on state law), girls are still considered sexually available the moment they start developing breasts, which can start as early as 8 or 9.

For years she is indoctrinated with a culture that values and objectified her only as a sexual being, so that if she starts to flirt with an older man when she is still under the age of consent, she’s called jailbait and blamed for tempting him to break the law. He’s never asked why he couldn’t control himself or say no.

This is rape culture. It starts the moment a girl gets breasts.

(via gwynnemeeks)

At my high school the dress code for girls is upheld very strictly, unless it is “game day” and you are a cheerleader. In that case you are required to wear your uniform to school all day, no matter how cold or rainy it is (which is a very common occurrence because this is the Pacific NW). No other sports team is required to wear their uniforms to school on game days. Because the cheerleaders are supposed to “advertise,” but whenever any other girl does it she’s a “distraction.”
